Fronde senior business analysts achieve Certified Business Analysis Professional status

21 November 2007

Fronde Systems Group is pleased to announce that two of its senior business analysts – Desiree Chu and Tony Newport - have achieved Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAPTM) status.

CBAP is the certification standard of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBATM). There are currently only six other CBAPs in New Zealand. Desiree and Tony completed the requisite exam in San Francisco in October 2007.

The IIBA was established in 2003 with the aim of furthering the role of business analysis and improving the skills and knowledge of business analysts. The IIBA is a non-profit professional association which currently comprises over 5,300 members in 69 chapters spread throughout 36 countries.

The CBAP exam was established by the IIBA to provide an international standard and qualification for business analysts. It has been aligned with ISO standard ISO/IEC 17024, General Requirements for Bodies Operating Certification of Persons. The certification process is rigorous, requiring candidates to demonstrate solid work experience in at least four of six areas of knowledge as described in the IIBA’s Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOKTM). These are:

  • Enterprise Analysis – understanding context for requirements
  • Requirements Planning and Management – defining how business analysis will be done (tools/techniques), inputs/outputs, change control, priorities
  • Requirements Elicitation – capturing requirements
  • Requirements Analysis and Documentation – analyse data, identify gaps, produce requirements documentation
  • Requirements Communication – present findings/solutions, gain common understanding from stakeholders
  • Solutions Assessment and Validation – ensure solution meets objectives
  • Fundamentals – baselines skills and knowledge required

Candidates must provide evidence of at least five years (7,500 hours) relevant work experience within the last 10 years (as aligned to the BABOK), 21 hours training within the last four years, two written referees, and a signed code of conduct. Currently there are 189 CBAPs worldwide.

Fronde believes that establishment of a certification programme is an important step in recognising the uniqueness and significance of business analysis as a profession within the IT industry. It helps to set the standards by which the skills and knowledge of business analysts can be measured against. By attaining certification Desiree and Tony have demonstrated a high level of competency in their profession at a senior level, with the necessary skills and knowledge to support that.
