Convendium trusts Fronde to deliver mobile payments solution

When Convendium began developing its vending machine technology for the New Zealand market, it wanted to offer customers the ultimate purchasing convenience and that meant accepting payments by mobile phone.

"Already 20 per cent of our purchases are via mobile phone, The Vendi machine is equipped with a robust mobile payments solution that will allow us to grow and expand our business.”

Criag Sinclair, CEO of Convendium

Convendium recognised Fronde as a leader in the field of mobile payments, following the company's development of the TXT-a-Park solution used to make paying for parking easy in sities across New Zealand.

Client

Convendium Limited is a New Zealand based business aiming to change the shape of convenience purchasing with a new generation of vending machine technology.

Convendium’s Vendi machine and technology is designed for a global market, offers a wide range of products and can be customised for individual brands or specific product lines.

Challenge

Convendium identified a new business opportunity to develop cashless, on-line vending machines for the New Zealand and Australian markets.

While the use of mobile phones to make payments is widespread overseas, it remains a new technology in New Zealand.  Convendium realised it needed to work with an IT provider with local experience in mobile payments.  Convendium recognised Fronde’s expertise in this area and chose to bring the company on board to define and deliver its complete mobile payment solution.

Process

Fronde worked with Convendium to build a generic mobile payment platform for its new vending machines, offering customers a flexible payment option. The solution needed to be readily available, reliable and able to handle a high volume of transactions.

Behind the scenes, the vending machine connects to the hosted txt-to-pay via an internal GPRS wireless modem to pre-authorise the required funds, the vending machine receives the go-ahead to dispense the product and the system requests payment from Vodafone. All of which takes place in a matter of minutes.

Outcome

Convendium launched onto the New Zealand market in January 2008 and since start up, the company has a secured list of top clients including Auckland Airport, Formule 1 hotels, Les Mills, AUT and Massey University. The company’s cashless machines are helping its clients to provide choice and convenience to their customers.
